7-1-2009 When to do it yourself…..and when not to

image
Common Situation: You have a job to do and can't decide whether or not to do it yourself.
There used to be a huge tree adjacent to our building. It put out enough leaves to clog the gutters, but it was still a scraggly, ugly tree. If it blew over in a storm it could cause some serious damage, so I decided that it needed to come down. First, I thought about calling some friends over ( Thomas Harris ) and having a tree-cutting party. Not wanting to burden anyone with the clean-up task, I asked a landscape guy to handle it. Turns out that due to the terrain and the proximity of the tree to the building, the initial felling was a much more serious task than we initially thought. So, guess what? The landscape guy subcontracted the initial cut to ANOTHER guy - an expert with tons of experience. So, Subcontractor #2 dropped the tree, then Subcontractor #1 chopped it up and hauled it off. What was I doing all this time? WORKING - OF COURSE! While it would have been interesting and fun to tackle it myself, there is no doubt that I would have screwed something up.

Is there a message in here somewhere?
Business owners should always outsource things that they cannot do efficiently or do not want to do. We have worked to create a business model that delivers routine maintenance of business computer networks in the most efficient manner possible. Our system includes 24/7 network monitoring, proactive maintenance, backup testing and free training seminars. If we take care of the 'background stuff,' then you can concentrate on doing what you do to make more money. Right? Maybe in some future blogs I will share some of the many disasters I've created by trying to fix things myself!

6-23-2009 New Website coming together….

I'm excited about our new web site - sort of. I can tell that it's going to take a lot of work to get it initially loaded-up and more continuous work to keep it updated. However, I am happy ( so far ) with the way things have gone.

One of the things that I *wanted* was the ability to update the web site myself. So, I can now log in and update blogs, testimonials, training videos, etc. And the good news is that I don't have to do any PROGRAMMING or FTP'ing to get it done.

So I am learning how to modify the site using the Expression Engine tools - I'll let you know how it goes.
